GWERU City Council is planning to relocate Kudzanai long- distance bus terminus from the central business district (CBD) to Mtapa suburb amid indications that the owner of the land where the terminus is located wants to develop it.

Chamber Secretary Mr Vakai Chikwekwe told a full council meeting yesterday that the plans were now at an advanced stage.

Mr Chikwekwe said council mooted the idea to move the terminus from the CBD more than five years ago.

“The plans to relocate Kudzanai long-distance bus terminus are at an advanced stage. The relocation will commence soon although we are not yet sure of the exact date. The idea was first mooted long back but now the local authority is forced to move as the land owner has indicated that they want to come and develop it,” he said.

Mr Chikwekwe, however, did not divulge the name of the buyer of the amount the terminus had been sold for.

In an interview, Gweru Mayor Councillor Charles Chikozho said when complete, the new terminus, which will contain a shopping mall and industrial stands, will be named Monomotapa longdistance bus terminus.

Clr Chikozho said the land has been identified and a team has been set up to run the project, which is set to commerce soon.

“We are working on sprucing up the city’s image by relocating the Kudzanai long-distance bus terminus to Mtapa suburb. The terminus will be built on a 20-hectare piece of land together with a shopping mall and industrial stands and will be called Monomotapa long-distance bus terminus,” he said.

Clr Chikozho said the move was meant to attract investors into the city.

“We hope the project, especially the industrial stands, will lure individual and investors to develop the city,” he said.
