B/bridge RDC repairs 50 boreholes

BEITBRIDGE Rural District Council has entered into a partnership with the International Medical Corps to rehabilitate 50 boreholes in the district as part of their water and sanitation programme, an official has said.

Chief executive Mr Peter Moyo said the programme was almost complete.

“The programme started in January and is almost complete. The idea is to have all our 1 350 boreholes functioning properly,” he said.

“We have also trained borehole committees and pump minders so that they can attend to minor faults expeditiously. They may only request our assistance on major challenges.

“The repaired boreholes are spread across the district. As a local authority we will keep seeking more partnerships to accelerate infrastructure development in our area”.

He said the programme also include the construction and repair of drinking troughs for livestock.

He said they were also testing the water at all the repaired boreholes for the safety of both human and livestock consumption.

Beitbridge Paramount Chief Stauze (David Mbedzi) said in a recent interview that access to water remained a major challenge for most people and livestock.

He said in places where there are boreholes, they are either far away from the villagers or not functioning to capacity. — Herald Reporter.
