Mutare police on high alert for post election violence

POLICE in Manicaland are on the high alert in case of any incidences of post-election violence and have intensified their presence in Mutare to ensure the smooth flow of business.

The increased patrol presence comes after a vigorous awareness campaign to maintain peace undertaken by the police force during the past week.

Manicaland police spokesperson Inspector Tavhiringwa Kakohwa confirmed the development in an interview with The Herald. “Police in Manicaland have pledged to remain committed to their constitutional mandate of maintaining peace and order, as well as protecting the lives and property of people before, during and after the 2018 harmonised elections.

“Following the unfortunate post-election violence that erupted in the capital last week, Manicaland police force has upped its game in increasing the number of police officers present on the streets of Mutare,” he said.

He said the elections were held in a peaceful manner and this is the same atmosphere the police force was trying to maintain to ensure the smooth flow of business in the province.

“Mutare is the capital and the heart of the province where most business transactions and processes take place and we have ensured peace prevails within the city by dispatching our officers to every corner,” said Insp Kakohwa.

Inspector Kakohwa said it was the constitutional mandate of the police to ensure peace and order prevails in the province.

“For this reason, we are committed to upholding the Constitution and enforcing the law without fear or favour,” said Insp Kakohwa.
