Three councillors eye mayorship

-

THREE MDC-Alliance councillors are eyeing the Chitungwiza mayoral post after sailing through in interviews held by their party recently.

The three are Goodwill Mushangwe (Ward 9), Jabulani Mtunzi (Ward 15) and Gift Tsverere (Ward 22).

MDC-Alliance information and publicity secretary for Chitungwiza Mr Bernard Mazhindu confirmed the development.

“We conducted interviews for four interested candidates for the mayoral post last week through an independent panel,” he said.

“The interviews were quite tough, but only three sailed through as was required by the party head office.”

Mr Mazhindu said the names will be put forward to party leader Mr Nelson Chamisa, who will have the final say.

“We have since forwarded the names to the president (Mr Chamisa) who will make the final decision most likely after the inauguration is done since mayors are supposed to be elected during councillors’ first sitting.”

Mr Mazhindu said the three candidates had different attributes.

“Mtunzi is the current provincial youth chairperson and a long serving cadre of the party,” he said. “He is highly regarded politically although his academic background is average.

“Tsverere is a youthful cadre and hold a master’s degree in Public Administration, while Mushangwe is the outgoing deputy mayor who was now the acting mayor after Phillip Mutoti was suspended for criminal abuse of office.” — Herald Reporter.
