Dig deeper into ZESA rot

-

EDITOR — It is good that the ZESA top brass is appearing in court to answer to charges of corruption for a case that should have been discovered three or four years ago.

One has to ask why the delay and why the Ministry of Energy or the ZESA Board of Directors, failed to charge the trio with gross incompetence, cowardice and failure to exercise fiducial responsibility?

We hope the State Procurement Regulatory Board has done thorough investigations and all culprits will have their day in court.

With the assistance of Indian authorities, the Indian supplier in the scandal must also not be spared. The losses ZESA incurred must be recouped.

Congratulations to the police, the NPA and everyone else involved, for bringing the matter to the courts.

ZESA’s auditors may have some explaining to do as well. Congratulations are due to the new dispensation for its determination to eradicate corruption and to improve Government effectiveness.

The other ZESA corruption cases, such as ZPC’s diesel power-generating white elephant in Dema, and the misguided Gwanda solar power plant project, must also be put under the microscope.

The suppliers, or would-be suppliers to these projects, who most likely greased the system, must also be hauled to court and the parastatal’s losses recovered.

In the fight against corruption, there must be no holy cows and crucially, no prisoners taken. Regards, Chirorodziva.
