THE national chairperson of Women in Tourism, an initiative of the Zimbabwe Tourism Authority, Mrs Enivia Mutsamwiwa, has challenged women to play a leading role in the development of the economy through tourism.

She was speaking during the formation of the women in tourism Masvingo chapter in the ancient city last week.

Mrs Mutsamwiwa said it was important for women to actively participate in tourism-related projects, which seek to economically empower them.

“There is need for women to come up with sustainable solutions to challenges they are facing especially in the tourism sector,” she said.

“Tourism is not about hospitality only. It is linked to everything that contributes to its growth and national economic development. We expect leaders of women initiatives to be confident, trustworthy and transparency as they discharge their duties at all levels.”

Regency Hotels general manager Mrs Maria Makwara, who was elected to lead the Masvingo chapter, commended the Government for prioritising the role played by women in socio-economic development.

“We hail the move by Government to empower women through a number of initiatives. Further, I want to assure women in this province that we will work with all of like minds and with a shared vision in rolling out projects to socially and economically empower them.

“We look forward to working with all the great minds in this region to further develop tourism programmes to boost the local and national economy,” she said.
