Govt hailed for acting on Rushinga water

- Cletus Mushanawani Mashonaland Central Bureau

RUSHINGA legislator Cde Tendai Nyabani has hailed Government for its timely intervention in addressing the water situation in the constituency.

Government’s intervention came at a time when villagers in the area were losing their livestock which were getting stuck in the mud in dams that were almost dry.

“I would like to commend Government for its timely intervention in addressing the water crisis in Rushinga,” said Cde Nyabani.

“The intervention will go a long way in ensuring adequate water supplies in the district.”

The Zimbabwe National Water Authority is already on the ground drilling 50 boreholes and setting up 50 weir dams. The District Development Fund has also come on board and is also drilling 10 additional boreholes.

“We want to applaud the Second Republic for having the people at heart. Government has also availed $900 000 for water reticulation at Rushinga and Chimhanda growth points. This will also be extended to Nyamatikiti High School which has boarding facilities.”

Cde Nyabani said each of the 25 wards in Rushinga would get two boreholes and two weir dams.

He said dam scooping had already started in the district to ensure adequate water supplies to livestock.

“The water crisis is now being addressed and we are now appealing to Government to work on addressing the food shortages,” said Cde Nyabani.

“The situation is now dire as some families are now surviving on wild fruits. From the grain that we are getting from the Department of Social Welfare, households are sharing between five to 20kg of maize.”
