HARARE, 19 November 1993. — Goods worth $1 million, received from the Chinese government, were on Wednesday distributed to various beneficiaries by the Development Trust of Zimbabwe.
The goods, which included 10 tractors, 170 industrial sewing machines, 50 bicycles, 100 000 disposable syringes, 10 typewriters and 46 cases of toys arrived in the country in June this year. Each of the country’s eight provinces received a tractor and the remaining two were given to the Institute of Agricultural Engineering and DTZ.
The sewing machines were given to DTZ’s newly formed clothing factories in Bulawayo.
The typewriters will be used by DTZ. Disposable syringes were distributed to rural clinics. The toys will be given to rural schools.
Vice President Joshua Nkomo said the tractors would be put on test by the District Development Fund.
If they proved viable, the Government would import more or might consider going into a joint venture with the Chinese manufacturer.
