Christmas cheer Fund: Council reaches out to corporates

- Sharon Chigeza Mutare Correspondent

COUNCIL has reached out to corporates to raise funds for this year’s edition of the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund.

The initiative, which has been running for over 10 years, seeks to raise funds to assist the less-privileged in society.

This year’s edition has not been officially launched yet.

Mutare Mayor Councillor Blessing Tandi last week said despite failure to launch the cheer fund, as per tradition, goodies and money would be raised through corporates and donated to the less-privileged in the city.

“Regardless of the economic difficulties in the country, we still have to have the spirit of Ubuntu. The less-privileged will always need our help so we have sent out letters of request to companies around the city,” he said.

He said the Christmas Cheer Fund Committee had not set a target for this year, but whatever is raised would be directed to orphanages and old people’s homes around the city adding that this would be announced later this week.

Every year, the City of Mutare through the Mayor’s Christmas Cheer Fund which is jointly implemented by a fund committee and stakeholders organise the launch where they initiate or start off the process of fundraising towards the Cheer Fund. During this process donations are received from well-wishers or stakeholders.

Clr Tandi said well-wishers should continue to spread love and compassion to the vulnerable members of society to demonstrate the spirit of giving, which is synonymous with Christmas.
