Zim softball team hailed
ZIMBABWE Softball Association president Stonard Mapfumo has hailed the senior women’s national team after they made significant strides on the world rankings.
Despite failing to qualify for the World Cup which was held in Japan earlier this year, the women’s national team still did well in other competitions to move up the African rankings and most importantly found a way to be ranked globally.
The team moved three places up the African rankings ladder to 5th place while they now occupy 60th position in the world rankings.
“This means that we are developing and getting more competitive, we believe our ranking is based on our recent international participation,” Mapfumo said.
The team played at the Africa Women World Championship qualifiers in Pretoria, South Africa, in January where they faced Botswana, Lesotho and South Africa; and won a bronze medal.
“We are a force to reckon with, as an association we are proud of the work we have been doing since 2008 when we became a stand-alone association”, Mapfumo said.
He added that ZSA have also been nominated for a post in the Region V Africa Softball Confederation in the executive committee.
“It is a positive move and shows that Zimbabwe softball is recognised on the regional platform and it is a reflection of the splendid work we have been doing as an association towards the development of softball in this country.
“We are now number five in Africa but we are the bronze medal holders”, Mapfumo said.
