Council gets 1m Euro from GIZ
THE German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) is set to avail 1 million euro to the Harare City Council for the stabilisation of water and sanitation services in selected high density areas to contain the outbreak of cholera and other infectious diseases.
GIZ officials approached the City of Harare with a proposal to implement the project.
Technical support programmes by GIZ in combination with financing from the Australian Development Cooperation helped to stabilise and in some part to improve water and sanitation situation of the population in selected cities of Zimbabwe in recent years.
Minutes of the Environmental Management Committee indicated that the town clerk Eng Hosiah Chisango told councillors that the proposed project would continue and extend the advisory approach and successful interventions in partnership with the City of Harare.
“In line with the short duration of the project and the planned volume, this measure focused on the most cholera affected areas of Harare, the two neighbourhoods of Glenview and Budiriro to maximise their effectiveness,” read the minutes.
“The aim was to improve the capacity of public service providers at district level to provide water and sanitation services in the two areas through various interventions.
“The project would support Harare City Council in rehabilitation and maintenance of water and waste water infrastructure as well as solid waste management in a selected pilot area. GIZ would provide the funding for the project and technical expertise while the City of Harare was expected to provide facilities, such as storage areas, as required by the project, initiate project management teams and provide labour within the jurisdiction of the City of Harare, including supervisory staff to organise the implementation of the activities.”
The project is planned for a period of 18 months (November 2018 to April 2020) at a total cost of 1 million euro.
