Govt avails $1m for school development
GOVERNMENT has released $1 million for the completion of Ruvimbo High School which will help decongest high schools in Chinhoyi and increase access to Advanced Level education in the town.
In an interview on the sideline of a Mashonaland West provincial prize giving day and School Development Associations manual launch last week, acting provincial education director Mr Gabriel Mhuma said the funds would help to expedite construction of the school.
The funds were released under the Public Sector Investment programme and would help in completing the school which was started by Chinhoyi Municipality. “We have received confirmation that $1m has been approved for the construction of a school called Ruvimbo High School in Ruvimbo suburb,” said Mr Mhuma.
“We are happy that at least the local authority had something on that school and this money will ensure the completion or near completion of the school.”
The school will have high school status offering A’ Level classes in the new residential area, in a move aimed at increasing access to education to match the growing population and settlement in Chinhoyi.
Mr Mhuma said it was the province’s wish to have schools in other urban centres such as Kadoma, Chegutu, Kariba, Norton and Karoi to decongest existing schools and subsequently improve the quality of education.
More than half of the pupils at schools such as Knowe Primary School in Norton, which had 34 pupils getting five units at Grade 7, Mr Mhuma said, would proceed with their education elsewhere owing to the shortage of high schools.
The event saw students from the province’s seven districts who excelled in their Ordinary and Advanced Level examinations in 2018 being honoured and presented with prizes.
Macdonald Kanenga of Sanyati got prize money from Sanyati House of Assembly Member Cde Polite Kambamura after getting 30 points at A’ Level.
Kanenga sat for six subjects - Pure Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Statistics and Economics. He aspires to be an actuarial analyst. A 15-year-old Chinhoyi High school pupil Sifiso Ukaka was honoured for getting 6As and a C when she sat for her O’ Level examination while in Form 3.
She went on to get a further 3As in Physics, Chemistry and Pure Mathematics in November 2018 and expects to sit for her A’ Level examinations in June this year.
Ukaka wants to be an aerospace engineer. The event was attended by acting Primary and Secondary Education permanent secretary Mr Peter Muzavazi, House of Assembly members including Cde Precious Chinhamo-Masango (Mhangura), Cde Doubt Ndiweni (Hurungwe Central), Cde Freddy Kapuya (Mhondoro Mubaira), teachers and headmasters.
