Roki, Trevor Dongo in Byo boost

- Kundai Marunya Arts Correspondent

WHEN most thought their music careers have taken a back seat or are dead, popular urban grooves musicians Roki and Trevor Dongo have stumbled on a fountain of hope in Bulawayo.

The duo will headline belated birthday celebrations of Bulawayo based businessman-cum-promoter Edington Muneri of Chicco Promotions at Zanzibar Hostesses tomorrow night.

The once celebrated musicians have of late been subject of ridicule over their various controversies which took a toll on their careers but this has not stopped Muneri from giving them a platform to shine in Bulawayo.

The show, to be held in conjunction with fast-food chain Barcelos Zimbabwe, will see the duo sharing stage with a number of other artistes.

Muneri said his eyes are set on promoting local music. “My objective here is not just to celebrate my birthday but to help expose and uplift local artistes,” he said.

Although he works with artistes from different parts of the country, Muneri has a soft spot for Bulawayo musicians.

“I especially want to uplift talented but unrecognised artistes from Bulawayo because there is a wrong perception that talented artistes only come from Harare, and I just don’t agree with it,” he said.

Artistes from Bulawayo performing at the celebrations include Njanji Simbi Hombe, Maste Jeftaz, Bhauren, King J, Volcanic, Project X and Smashmaker among many others. All these have shown huge potential for career boost but have been lacking the financial muscle to back them to reach their potential.

Muneri called on fellow promoters to help upcoming artistes.

“I also call upon fellow promoters, the corporate world and Zimbabwe at large to give a hand in supporting local artistes realise their dreams.

“I also openly invite artistes who feel they have what it takes to rock the industry to contact me,” he said.

One of the rising artistes in the line-up, Njanji, is already working with Muneri to further boost his career. His manager, Andrew Musoni of Hard Mashona Arts and Culture Trust, said they are grateful for the support.
