CAPS want to challenge for the title

CAPS United say they are ready to challenge for the Castle Lager Premiership title once again after a disappointing campaign last year.

The Green Machine start their latest journey with a tricky assignment against ambitious newboys Manica Diamonds.

Luke Masomere, who already has a league championship under his belt, transformed Manica Diamonds into a Premiership side by steamrolling the opposition last season.

However, there is a feeling in domestic football that the ZIFA Eastern Region has the weakest Division One league in the country.

But, while clubs from that league have struggled in the past, Manica Diamonds have the capacity to change all that.

They have the financial muscle, which has seen them raid players from a number of clubs, including Makepekepe, and their leadership want them to deliver trophies.

CAPS United technical director Nelson Matongorere said the Green Machine were now ready for the new season.

“We have targets and goals, which we want to achieve in the 2019 season, and we are guided by the club’s vision,’’ said Matongorere.

“We are happy as the technical team and the players that were given the opportunity to plan for this season.

“The pre-season lasted for about nine weeks and all the four basics factors, which are required — that is the physical, technical, tactical and psychological aspects of the game — were dealt with.

“We need to have a good start to the season by collecting maximum points. We will be at home and we need to please our fans and I urge them to come in their numbers.

There is a lot at stake and we hope it will give the boys confidence if we win our opening match.’’

Speedy wingers Gabriel Nyoni and Phineas Bhamusi are set to start on Sunday with expectations high they could be great assets for the Green Machine this season.
