Songani now best paid local footballer

- Tadious Manyepo Sports Reporter

FORMER Harare City midfielder Silas Songani is now the highest paid footballer in the domestic Premiership after he signed a lucrative deal with champions FC Platinum on Wednesday.

Details of the deal, though, were not made public.

Top clubs, i ncluding the pair of Harare giants CAPS United and Dynamos, had been scrambling for Songani’s signature since he announced his availability on the local market.

The 2013 Soccer Star of the Year runner- up decided against renewing his contract with Danish side, Sondrsky, where he has been playing for the past half- a- dozen years.

It is the Zvishavane club, as expected, which insiders say dangled the most attractive carrot for the 29- year- old former Warriors trialist.

Songani is understood to have made an attempt to rejoin Harare City but the lure of playing in the CAF Champions League, and the general attractive working conditions at coach Pieter De Jongh side, prompted him to change his heart.

Though FC Platinum spokesperson Chido Chizondo couldn’t confirm it, sources at the club revealed Songani will become the best paid footballer in the country.

“I cannot give the figures at the moment but the second best paid player at FC Platinum ( thought to be Gift Bello) will be earning a third of what Songani will be getting,” said the source.

Chizondo said her team was excited with the latest capture.

“We are excited to have a player of his calibre in our fold . . . The head coach and entire team have made it clear where we aspire to be in the future.

“We want to become a leading football brand in Africa and by that ideal we are working on ensuring that we have the right crop of players that will ensure we get to the promised land,” said Chizondo in a statement.

The attacking midfielder becomes the latest addition to the Zvishavane side.

Coach De Jongh has not made it a secret that the team needs to sign proven goal scorers.

FC Platinum have played football non- stop for the past three years and they badly need fresh legs in their squad with the 2020 Premiership season starting next month and the CAF Champions League coming in August.

The Zvishavane side, for the second season running, have failed to clear the group stage hurdle.

They were knocked out in their group after collecting a meagre single point out of a possible 18.

The team yesterday also secured the signature of goalkeeper Future Sibanda.

The 2019 Soccer Star of the Year first runner- up Ralph Kawondera, Donald Dzvinyai, Godswill Gwara, Nomore Chinyerere, Denzel Khumalo, Last Jesi and Stanley Ngala have already joined the Zvishavane club.
