ZIMBABWE have named a strong three-member team for this year's FIDE online rapid World Cup chess tournament to be held next month.

The selection stage will be held between August 1 and 20, which will be a 10-round Swiss event, and the finals stage will be played as a knockout event from August 26-31.

An important development for chess was the growth of internet chess over the past year and a half as the world is fighting one of its toughest battles ever against Covid19 and humanity has had to adjust to the current situation.

The World chess body (FIDE) this year is hosting a tournament for youth and cadets between 10 and 18 years.

Zimbabwe have three players that registered to take part in this event, with Jordan Gweshe set to represent the Under-10s as Carol Ndlovu will play in the Under-14 agegroup while Tinotenda Gadza will play in the Under-18s section.

The Zimbabwe Chess Federation secretary-general, Todd Mapingire, said taking part in the tournaments will broaden the junior players' horizons.

“Taking part in such events will undoubtedly broaden the junior chess players' horizons in their quest to chess mastery. I would like to thank the parents that encourage and support their children through and through when such opportunities arise.

“I wish them the best of luck in their games”, said Mapingire.

Zimbabwe will after the selection stage have the top three in each section join the top five highest rated players in each category for the finals.
