ZIMBABWEAN karateka Ashley Khuddu has upped her preparations ahead of the 2022 Africa Karate Championships (UFAK) scheduled for Durban, South Africa, from December 2 to 4.

The 24- year- old first dan black belt holder said she is confident she will do well at the tournament which is used as a qualifier for the World Championships.

“I started to take the sport seriously when I was 12- years- old under sensei Winston Nyanhete at the RBZ Sports Club Dojo. I have won several tournaments throughout my sporting career with the best being World Goju Ryu Champions where I attained a silver and bronze medals last year.

“I am feeling good and motivated after last week’s Kurai Open Championships at Alexandra Sports Club where I won a gold medal in my category.

“I have been preparing for the South Africa tournament for over a year now and I am looking forward to it. My coach has been pushing me hard and I am glad he has been an inspiration to me. Taking part in the Durban tournament will also help me in terms rankings against athletes in Africa.

“Judging from the tournaments I have competed in this year, I am expecting to do well and represent the country very well. Taking part in these tournaments help me gain exposure and improve my skill,” said Khuddu.

With support from her family, Khuddu believes there is need for more support for the sport which is still growing.

“I have travelled a long journey with the support of my friends and family but I think it’s high time corporates come on board and support us. Karate is an individual sport and to remain relevant you need to take part in several tournaments and that requires a lot of resources,” said Khuddu.
