Heritage honour outstanding athletes
ZIMBABWE golf and hockey national team players Tariro November and Tatenda Maswera were crowned the 2022 Heritage Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year on Wednesday night.
The duo were handed over their floating trophies by school head, Crispen Mhike, at a colourful ceremony attended by pupils and parents. November, who is part of the national junior and amateur golf teams, walked away with a trophy for his outstanding performances so was Maswera, who is a member of the Zimbabwe Under-21 hockey team that played in the World Cup qualifiers in South Africa. Heritage School took time to honour their outstanding sportspersons from all sporting disciplines with several athletes walking away with certificates and floating trophies.
Led by Gordon Pangeti, as the sports director, the annual Sportsperson of the Year awards ceremony went on well and he thanked the parents and everyone who took their time to attend the event.
“I would like to thank my fellow administrators, Audrey Mutandiro and Tadiwa Benyu, who helped us to come up with the winners. I would also like to thank everyone from the infants who made everything possible.
“We are happy with the performances after this post Covid-19 era as we have managed to resuscitate sports,” said Pangeti. To be on the podium, November, who is ranked second in the country’s golf order of merit, managed to win the Platinum Classic by more than 15-shots at Norton Country Club and he got a ranking on the World Amateur Golf Rankings.
He was then selected in the Zimbabwe amateur and junior teams which participated in South Africa. He was part of the amateur golf teams that took part in Egypt and Angola where he came fifth as an individual.
November also had his time in the Zimbabwe Open where he had a brilliant opening round only to miss the cut after he faulted during the second round.
Maswera has been riding high as a multi-talented sportsperson for both the school and country as she took part in athletics, tennis and basketball. However, it was in hockey where she has made a mark as she was the captain of the Heritage School team that went all the way without a defeat in the schools league. Takunda Mutiwadirwa, who is into swimming where he represented Harare Province, athletics and rugby, was voted the Junior Sportsman of the Year.
The Junior Sportswoman of the Year award was won by Kudziyeta Tomana who is also a versatile athlete in netball where she is the captain, tennis, athletics and hockey.
The Infant Sportswoman of the Year award went to multi-talented Lesley Mukumba while the Infant Sportsman of the Year accolade went to Calvin Chisenye.
