Female strikers on fire

THE strikers were on fire during the opening week of the Zimbabwe Women’s Super League with five players grabbing a brace each and one player scoring four goals as the football league exploded into life over the weekend.

Harare City Queens striker Kudakwashe Basopo scored four times as the visitors ran riot against Borrow Jets at Matabelela­nd Busters Sports club yesterday.

Harare City Rewesai Mutseneki weighed in with a double while Faith Chezhara,

Hazvinei Dhlakama, Normal Mandimandi and Ropafadzo Maferefa added a goal each.

Champions Herentals Queens forward Maud Mafuruse grabbed a brace in the 2- 1 victory against Platinum Royals at Gresham stadium in Zvishavane on Saturday.

Midlands State University strikers Ashely Mutonga and Sifikile Sibanda scored a brace apiece in their 4- 2 victo- ry against debutants Masvingo side Shine Shine.

Correction­al Queens’s midfielder Marjoury Nyaumwe also scored two goals as the Prisons and Correction­al side registered the biggest scoreline at the weekend with a 5- 0 thrashing of Faithdrive at Wagadhugu stadium.

Erina Jeke, Kudzai Chiparaush­e and Berita Kabwe scored the other goals for Correction­al Queens.

Champions Herentals Queens continued from where they left last season when they beat Sithetheli­we “Kwinji 15” coached side Platinum Royals.

Mafuruse’s goals carried the day for the visitors. Former Mighty Warriors and ZRP Queens midfielder Rutendo Madongorer­e scored for Platinum Royals. At One Commando, former Mighty Warriors skipper Felistas Muzongondi and Lydia Mapunhure scored for the army side.

Debutants Maningi Youth Academy got off to a winning start with a 2- 1 victory against Yadah Queens at Ya- dah ground. Maningi Youth Academy scorers Tawananyas­ha Mandishara and Nelly Pindurai were on target while Yadah got their consolatio­n goal from Ropafadzo Sadomba.

Debutants Shine Shine were beaten by MSU Queens but managed to respond with two courtesy of an own goal by MSU defender Brett Mahara and Hopemore Hove.
