Shot in the arm for Zim’s emergency response
THE International Telecommunications Union (ITU) has selected Zimbabwe as one of three beneficiaries in SADC to receive technical support towards the implementation of a National Emergency Telecommunication Plan.
Information Communication Technology (ICT), Postal and Courier Services Deputy Minister Dingimuzi Phuti yesterday hosted the first workshop towards the implementation process.
He said the decisions taken by the SADC Ministers underscored the importance of leveraging telecommunications technologies and regulatory frameworks to strengthen emergency communication systems in the region.
By implementing the recommendations and initiatives, SADC member states can enhance their resilience and responsiveness to disasters, ultimately contributing to the safety and well-being of their populations.
Deputy Minister Phuti said emergency communication was a critical component of disaster management, and it played a vital role in saving lives and mitigating the impact of disasters.
“By transposing the SADC Model NETP, we are taking a proactive step towards ensuring that our country is well-prepared to respond effectively to emergencies and disasters,” he said.
“The SADC Model NETP provides a comprehensive framework for establishing robust emergency telecommunication systems, enhancing coordination among stakeholders, and ensuring the availability of communication services during crises.
“By aligning our national plan with this model, we are not only improving our own preparedness but also contributing to regional efforts to enhance emergency communication capabilities.
“Today’s workshop provides us with a valuable opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions, share best practices, and collaborate on developing a tailored National Emergency Telecommunication Plan that meets the specific needs and challenges of Zimbabwe.
“I encourage all participants to actively participate, exchange ideas, and contribute their expertise towards shaping a robust and effective plan.”
Postal and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) director-general Dr Gift Machengete said effective communication, especially during emergencies is vital.
“In today’s rapidly evolving world, effective communication during emergencies is not just desirable; it is essential,” he said.
“Whether faced with natural disasters, public health crises, or other emergencies, the ability to swiftly and efficiently communicate can mean the difference between life and death.”
“Recognising this critical need, Zimbabwe has taken a proactive step by prioritising the development and implementation of a National Emergency Telecommunications Plan, with technical support from the ITU.”
