Youth League vows to defend ZiG

- Gloria Muruva and Rumbidzai Mushonga

ZANU PF Youth League Secretary Cde Tino Machakaire has urged young people and the nation at large to embrace the recently introduced ZiG currency.

The Youth League, as the vanguard of the ruling party Zanu PF, will not stand by and watch saboteurs destroying the country’s economy, he told the Youth League’s National Executive meeting in Harare yesterday.

Cde Machakaire commended the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe for issuing the monetary policy that led to the introduction of the gold backed ZiG currency.

“You are all aware that the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe issued a monetary policy last month that saw the introduction of a new structured currency. The introduction of the new currency is meant to address the issue of prices and exchange rate instability in the economy. The ZiG is expected to serve as a medium of exchange and store of value. In order to rebuild market confidence and trust, I urge all of us to embrace this new currency,” he said

Members of the Youth League should educate others about the significance of the new currency and the need to protect it against malcontents.

“Let us all educate our fellow comrades about this positive development in our economy. We are very much aware of some malcontents in our society who are bent on sabotaging our newly introduced currency. Let them be warned that their days are numbered. As the Youth League we will not sit and watch them do whatever they want, derailing the positive strides being made by the Second Republic,” he said.

Ahead of elections in South Africa this May, Cde Machakaire said Zanu PF would back its sister party the ANC.

“Our sister wing from the ANC (Youth League) has invited us to join them in their campaign trail ahead of their general elections scheduled for the end of this month.

“We shall be sending a delegation to South Africa very soon as a way of standing in solidarity with the ANC,” he said.

The meeting agenda also included co-options to fill vacant positions arising from the amendments made to the party’s constitution.

The co-opted members announced yesterday were:

Cde Blessing Mutomba: National Secretary for Mines and Energy Development;

Cde Charity Ndlovu: National Secretary for Local Government, Devolution and Housing;

Cde Charles Munganasa: Deputy National Secretary for Local Government, Devolution and Housing;

Cde Kudakwashe Mnangagwa: Deputy National Secretary for External Relations;

Cde Emily Jesaya: Deputy National Secretary for Mines and Energy Development.
