In a swift turn of events this week, the picture collage shows (top row), the Zimbabwe Defence Forces Commander General Constantino Chiwenga holding a news conference on Monday warning that the military will not hesitate to step in and stop a deteriorating political situation and the purging of politicians and Government officials who fought in the liberation struggle. The army moved in early Wednesday morning with Major General Sibusiso Busi Moyo addressing the nation on ZBCTV saying that the defence forces had stepped in to stop the situation from degenerating into violent conflict. Later on Wednesday, the Zimbabwe National Liberation War Veterans’ Association rallied behind the army. Below, in happier times last week, ZANU-PF Manicaland provincial executive committee members celebrate the axing of Vice President Mnangagwa during a meeting held in Mutare in which they purged 38 members linked to Cde Mnangagwa. Those blacklisted were Cdes Oppah Muchinguri, Patrick Chinamasa Chris Mushohwe, Mike Madiro, Joshua Sacco, Moses Gutu, Winnie Mlambo, Joseph Mujati, Christopher Chingosho, Alice Chitima, Oliver Mandipaka, Gorden Chikwanda, Timothy Mapungwana, Monica Mutsvangwa, Ellen Gwaradzimba, Tasin Dube, Hubert Nyanhongo and Judith Mawire. The members have suddenly gone into hibernation following the army’s announcement that it had taken control of things and that their mission was “to fish out criminals around President Mugabe.”
