ED names post-poll violence probe team
PRESIDENT Mnangagwa on Wednesday appointed former South African President Kgalema Motlanthe and other eminent persons locally and outside the country to lead a Commission of Inquiry into post-election violence that rocked Harare on August 1.
Six people died, while property worth thousands of dollars was destroyed by MDC-Alliance supporters who went on the rampage during the violent demonstration. Other members of the commission from outside the country are international law expert Mr Rodney Dixon QC from the United Kingdom, former Commonwealth Secretary-General Chief Emeka Anyaoku from Nigeria and former Chief of Defence Forces of the Tanzania People’s Defence Forces General (Retired) Davis Mwamunyange. — The Herald
Normal to below normal rainfall forecast
ZIMBABWE is expected to receive normal rains with a bias towards below normal throughout the 2018/19 season, Government has announced. The Meteorological Services Department said this implies the country will receive erratic rains during the 2018/19 season.
Presenting the 2018/19 seasonal rainfall forecast at the National Climate Outlook forum in Harare on Tuesday, Ambassador Grace Mutandiro said the weather and climate information was important for stakeholders to adequately plan and make informed decisions and plan their activities.
“The 2018/19 rainfall season is pointing towards an El Nino phase. El Nino is associated with above average warming of the sea surface temperatures of the Pacific Ocean and in most years is usually associated with reduced rainfall activity over the sub region. — The Herald
President lines up ‘thank you’ tours
PRESIDENT Mnangagwa will soon embark on a countrywide tour to thank the people for voting him and ZANU-PF in the July 30 harmonised elections, and will take the opportunity to outline Government’s programme on devolution of power.
The President said this when he handed over 90 cars to chiefs in fulfilment of Government’s commitment to improving the welfare of the traditional leaders.
“We are going to have rallies in your respective areas to thank the people for voting me into power,” he said.
