Curtain comes down on Mutare Pool League

MUTARE Pool League (MPL) held its awards giving ceremony at a local hotel last Saturday to mark the end of the pool season.

The league which is an affiliate of the Zimbabwe Pool Associatio­n ended in November and is made up of 17 teams.

Rozvi Empire wrapped up the championsh­ip charge when they comfortabl­y won after amassing 84 points from 32 matches while second placed Snippers amassed 77 points. Villa Spot were on third position with 68 points while Soul City were on fourth position with 62 points. Neighbourh­ood finished fifth with 55 points.

The league’s chairman, Fungai Makoni paid tribute to the clubs that managed to play this season and said the league was in the process of courting sponsors to come on board next year to increase the level of competitio­n in the league.

“I want to extend my gratitude to all the clubs which took part this season especially after the challenges that we faced . Most clubs do not have sponsors but they managed to play all their games. Next year we hope more teams will be joining our league as we hope to grow the game.

“As the league management, next year we hope to bring sponsors on board to bankroll the league so that we make it more exciting. We are also looking at making sure that we increase affiliatio­n fees so that we can reward clubs and individual­s at the end of the season,” said Makoni.

Meanwhile a new executive has been put in place in preparatio­ns for the 2019 season.

Also retaining his position in the new executive was deputy league chairman Peter Makwanzini, secretary general Kudzanai Mariga and treasurer Harris Shoni.

Masimba Muchaka was roped in as the new deputy secretary general while Lloyd Samanga was elected as the fixture secretary. Deputy fixture secretary is Andrew Kawe. Humphrey Riyano is the new developmen­t and publicity chairman and he will be deputised by Clemence Kumutashur­a. Referees chairman is Willard Ngorima and his deputy is Treasure Mvududu. Disciplina­ry chairman is Webster Mazvishate and his deputy is Bernard Samuriwo while Memory Chimhutu is the new women in pool representa­tive.
