Mountaineers captain speaks on poor start

- Ray Bande Senior Reporter

MOUNTAINEERS captain, Kevin Kasuza, believes his lads have what it takes to bounce back after a poor start in the Logan Cup competition.

“Well, we had a bad start. We lost, so we need to bounce back. We have a young side and I hope they will also come to the party by improving fast before it is too late. Everyone needs to show that they deserve to play,” said Kasuza.

In the opening round of Logan Cup matches, Mountaineers lost by six wickets to Eagles.

In an encounter in which batting reportedly looked quite easy for almost the first time in this Logan Cup match as identical innings of 44 by Wessly Madhevere (not out) and Kudzai Maunze took Eagles to a comfortable victory.

Mountaineers began the third day of this match on 22 for one wicket in their second innings, with Joylord Gumbie on 17 and Dion Myers four.

The talented Myers is struggling to adjust to first-class cricket, as he groped uncharacteristically at several deliveries before edging one that almost carried to slip, and then edged the next that was well caught low down by the wicketkeeper Regis Chakabva off Brad Evans; not a run had been added yet.

Such was the poor start to the competition that Mountaineers captain hopes his colleagues will make amends.

Meanwhile, Zimbabwe will host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023, the International Cricket Council (ICC) announced recently.

The tournament, scheduled for June 18 to July 9, 2023, will feature 10 teams and serve as the final qualifying event to decide the last two participants for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 in India.

The ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier 2023 participants will include the bottom five sides from the 13-team ICC Cricket World Cup Super League, excluding India, as well as the top three teams from the World Cup League Two and the top two teams from the World Cup Qualifier Playoff.

All matches in the qualifier tournament will have one-day international status.
