The Manica Post

How colours evolve

- Friday Lessons with Sir Mwanyisa

GREETINGS learners, parents and guardians!

Welcome to your Visual and Performing Arts weekly lessons brought to you by your favourite newspaper, The Manica Post.

Learners are expected to have an exercise book and a pen to write work given as exercises. Parents or guardians are encouraged to assist learners with special needs.

Learners are expected to be able to explain how tints, tones and shades are made.

In our previous lesson we defined colour as reflection of light. Light form the sun is a combination of all colours. This explains why we see different colours when there is a rainbow.

What are tints?

Tints are colours that are made by mixing white to a hue found on the colour wheel. The colour is made less intense or light. Adding white to red makes pink. Colours that are added white tend to be calmer and quieter. Do not forget hue +white is equal to a tint.

What are tones?

Another colour that is interesting to make is a shade. In order to make a shade,

you mix black and white first and get grey. This means that black + white is grey. Adding grey to any hue gives us a tone. Grey + red is a tone. Depending on the amount of black or white added, a tone can be darker or lighter than the original hue.

What are shades?

When black is added to a hue, you get what are called shades. Shades are darker than the original hue. This means black + red gives you a dark red. Care must be taken when adding black to a hue because the colour can completely change.

The mixing of colours to white, black or grey gives the artists different intensities of the colours. Intensity of colour is called value.

Task:

Produce a drawing or painting using different shades and tones of the same colour. (tip : It can be a portrait or drawing).

Show your teacher and send the drawing for publication in The Manica Post.

Task:

Draw a colour wheel on an A3 or A4 sized surface and give it to your teacher for display in your classroom. You can use crayons or water paints on manila, bond paper, or any surface that is in your environment.
