MPL clubs hide behind dead treasurer

- Ray Bande Senior Reporter

MUTARE Pool League is paying the price of activating a bank account late in the season as clubs are now claiming to have paid their affiliation fees in full to the late treasurer, Givemore Madiro.

With five rounds of league matches remaining before the curtain comes down on an eventful 2023/2024 season, it is not clear whether the clubs, especially those gunning for the title, will ever get a dime for their sweat on the table for their entire season.

An otherwise exciting and widely followed league was marred by maladministration which was exposed after Madiro’s death last year as it emerged that MPL had no functional bank account. All their funds were being kept under the pillow by the late Madiro.

Even though a bank account was eventually activated, investigations by this newspaper revealed that there is virtually nothing in the account at the moment.

MPL chairman, Peter Makwanzini said almost every club, including those notorious for not paying anything are now claiming to have submitted their affiliation fees to the late Madiro.

“We are trying hard to push the secretary general and new treasurer, Frank Marembo to follow up on clubs that did not pay affiliation and player registration fees. Some of the clubs did not pay for their players’ identity cards as well as player transfer fees. All this money has to be collected for us to come up the prize structure.

“It is proving to be a toll order as most club patrons are claiming to have paid through the late treasurer, though we actually know that they did not honour the payments.

“I am waiting for the final details from the new treasurer and secretary general. Our bank account is active now. The few dollars accounted by secretary general were deposited in the account.

“It is sad to note that everything is now being delayed by dishonest individuals who did not pay anything to the association, claiming to have paid through the late treasurer. It is sad that most of them are respected individuals. We are asking for proof of payment, but no one is coming forward,” said Makwanzini.
