Suicide over protection order

- Tinashe Mlambo

A Zimunya man recently took his life after his wife had taken a protection order against him.

Collen Mandofa (54) allegedly failed to accept the development and concluded that his marriage to Gratitude Ngirazi was over.

He then hung himself on a tree branch near their homestead.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the incident, saying Mandofa’s body was found hanging from a tree branch shortly after the court had granted a protection order against him.

“A tragic incident occurred in Madzime Village under Chief Zimunya, where Mandofa took his own life by hanging himself.

“The man was reportedly stressed after the court granted his wife a protection order against him, following allegations of domestic violence.

“It is alleged that the now late Mandofa was in the habit of threatening Ngirazi that he would take his life if she applied for a protection order against him. However, Ngirazi proceeded to apply for the order against him, and he did not take this lightly,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

He said last week on Friday, Mandofa left home and did not tell anyone where he was going.

“People at home saw him leaving, but did not ask him where he was going. It was only the next day that a fellow villager, Kingstone Mashonga, saw Mandofa’s body hanging from the tree at a nearby bush,” said Assistant Inspector Chinyoka.

A report was made to the police and they attended the scene.

Mandofa’s body was taken to Victoria Chitepo for a post mortem.
