- Hazel Chitepo

A man who took the law into his own hands and allegedly fatally stabbed a rival suitor thrice, accusing him of proposing love to his girlfriend was arrested for the offence.

Darlington Magaisa, of Gudo Village, allegedly stabbed Simon Machumi (26), of Mahachi Village with a knife three times on the left side of his back.

He accused the victim of proposing love to his girlfriend.

Acting Manicaland provincial police spokesperson, Assistant Inspector Wiseman Chinyoka confirmed the nasty incident that happened at Chifagume homestead in Chipinge on March 24.

He said Machumi arrived at Chifagume homestead selling pork meat, and spotted Magaisa sitting with his girlfriend.

He warned Magaisa to stay away from the woman.

A misunderstanding erupted between the two rival suitors, leading to a bloody fight.

“As they fought, Magaisa withdrew a knife from his pocket and stabbed Machumi on the left side of his back three times. Machumi ran for dear life, but Magaisa was in hot pursuit. Magaisa caught up with Machumi and stabbed him on the left side of the chest.

“The injured Machumi sought refuge at Chifagume’s homestead. Machumi tried to restrain Magaisa from further injuring him to no avail. Machumi was later taken to St Peter’s Mission Hospital and died on admission. The case was reported to the police in Chisumbanje, and investigations are in progress,” he said.

Assistant Inspector Chinyoka said police at Chisumbanje examined Machumi’s body and established a deep wound on the back.

Magaisa’s body was taken to St Peter’s Mission Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem.
