ZRA maintains water allocation

- OBERT SIAMILANDU

THE Zambezi River Authority (ZRA) will maintain its allocation of 45 billion cubic metres (BCM) of water to Zambia and Zimbabwe for their power utilities’ electricity generation at Kariba.

ZRA chief executive Munyaradzi Munodawafa said the authority will continue monitoring the water levels at Kariba before reviewing the water allocation for power generation.

“As such, the current combined water allocation already made to Zesco Limited and Zimbabwe Power Company and shared equally for their respective power generation operations at Kariba remains unchanged at 45 BCM,” Munodawafa said in a statement on Friday.

‘’ This will result in an increase in stored usable water for power generation at Kariba.”

‘’Accordingly, this will sustain reservoir operations and the associated power generation operations at Kariba up to the end of the year 2022 when the 2022/2023 rainfall season would have also likely commenced.”

ZRA is a binational organisation mandated to provide water for generation of electricity and for other purposes which the two countries may decide.
