Tropical storms

- By Tashinga Ruth Ndindana

I’ve been told about the many storms that carry the names of women

I’ve been told about how they are the most destructive I’ve had the opportunity of experiencing a tropical storm

Women with maximum sustained surface winds How their landing is as strong as a shockwave Women with tongues raging on wildfire

With hearts like volcanic eruptions

Puking hot lava and ash

With feet like earthquakes

Shaking every ground they trade on

Women with wombs like goldmines

Birthing precious stones

I know women have been labelled for the convenience of the society and patriarchy

But I’ve always wondered why the most destructive storms carry the names of women

Maybe women are cyclones

And cyclone is a name given to Mother Nature’s reclamation of herself.
