Convict escapes

A Zimbabwe National Water Authority (Zinwa) employee on Friday escaped from prison officers escorting him to jail after his conviction for having sex with a minor.

Saymore Mudungwe ignored warning shots fired by prison guards outside Mutoko Magistrates Court as he ran away.

He was caught after police unleashed sniffer dogs on him. Prosecutor Nathan Mujuru told the court that sometime in October, Mudungwe proposed love to the minor and she accepted.

On December 31, the girl eloped to Mudungwe’s place of residence and the two stayed as husband and wife for 10 days.

She was rescued by her mother who later filed a police report leading to his arrest, and subsequent conviction by Magistrate Elijah Sibanda.
