Former mayor to forge ahead with anti-corruption drive

FORMER Gweru City mayor Josiah Makombe has vowed to forge ahead with his anti-corruption drive at the townhouse after he bounced back into council last week.

The former Urban Councils Associatio­n of Zimbabwe president reclaimed his ward 2 seat in by-elections held on March 26, 2022.

“This (victory) is a sign that the citizens, residents and stakeholde­rs of ward 2 have con dence in me so that I can represent them at Gweru City Council as well as other civic issues that a ect our ward,” Makombe said.

“I am going back to council to complement the e orts of my fellow councillor­s in trying to work on issues to do with quality services and corruption.”

The former mayor once invited the Zimbabwe Anti-Corruption Commission (Zacc) to investigat­e allegation­s of graft at the local authority.

The local authority’s last ve-year strategic plan adopted in late 2017 acknowledg­es on page 17 of the 72-page document that it su ers many weaknesses, among them “dishonesty and corruption”, a “poor working culture”, “uncreditwo­rthiness” and oversta ng.
