City residents pollute village

- — NKOSENTSHA KHUMALO

BULAWAYO residents have turned a bush near Matobo North’s resettlement area into a dumpsite, driving all the way from the city to dump their garbage.

A visit to the area established that people were dumping various litter such as pumpers, pads and plastics among others.

Villagers in the area accused the culprits of polluting the environment, and causing cattle deaths.

A cattle farmer in Ward 25, Gibson Sbhula Ndlovu said there was need for urgent government intervention.

"Government needs to restore the highway fence as Bulawayo residents continue to sneak into our village and dump garbage in some parts of our area," said Ndlovu.

A Mlugulu villager, Milton Khumalo said it was hard to stop their cattle from consuming the garbage.

Matabeleland South Environment Management Agency (EMA) provincial manager Decent Ndlovu said the agency will work with police to arrest the culprits.

“To stop the dumping of that waste, anyone caught dumping litter will be made to clean the whole stretch including other illegal waste dumpsites found in the area,” Ndlovu said.
