Fault finding in a breakdown

aT some point your car will have a problem and you are far away from getting help.

You can carry out the repair yourself. Below are some suggested checks in case of a problem that don’t require a technician or going to a garage.

This article is for our readers who know little about cars.

Starter motor does not turn (engine fails to start), it may be a flat battery, loose connection­s (battery terminals) and corroded terminals.

engine turns slowly, but will not start, battery charge is low.

if the engine starts, but fails to idle, it might be incorrect starting procedure (cold aid starting, it applies to diesel engines), fuel tank might be low or empty, HT leads or dampness in spark plugs.

The car idles, but stalls, when accelarato­r pedal is depressed, it is caused by blocked or dirty air cleaner.

engine runs on while the ignition is switched off, it is overheatin­g check coolant level.

Overheatin­g is caused by low coolant and engine oil.

ignition warning light comes on, when engine is running, blown fuse or alternator drive belt loose or broken.

inoperativ­e electrical systems may be as a result of discharged battery, loose connection­s and blown fuse.

Vehicle vibrates when driving, it may be loose wheel nuts or wheel is out of balance.

Heavy steering is caused by low tyre pressure and inoperativ­e power assisted steering (fluid reservoir requires topping up). if the vehicle pulls to one side or wanders, usually it is caused by tyre pressure or uneven load. note that tyre pressures must be inflated to the specified level. all lights dim, when engine speed drops to idle, caused by low battery charge and loose alternator drive. Brakes judder, is as a result of overtighte­ned wheel nuts. a leak in brake circuit or air in system, result in increased brake pedal travel, therefore be prepared for an increased stopping distance.
