Sherwood Golf Club in festive delight
TRUSTAFRICA, the pan-African grant-making foundation, celebrated its year-end with a vibrant music gala at Sherwood Golf Club in Mabelreign on December 15.
Founded in 2006 and driven by the unwavering conviction that Africans must chart their course in tackling the continent’s challenges, TrustAfrica has blossomed into a beacon of empowerment and progress. This year’s festive gathering was a testament to their efforts, a joyous convergence of music and community.
Ngoma Yepasichigare, a captivating group of young Mbira players from Mhondoro who range between the ages of three and 12 years, opened up the night and brought a touch of ancestral magic to the proceedings with their enchanting Mbira-themed traditional sound.
Mwendamberi, formerly known as Solution GC, serenaded the crowd with his soulful vocals and heartfelt lyrics, while the ever-popular Mannex Motsi and his well-polished sixpiece reggae band Zimreggaestra brought an infectious energy to the stage, playing some of his popular tracks like “Munhu Mutema”, “Rosey” as well as cover versions of popular reggae songs.
Sherwood Golf Club, the backdrop for the momentous evening, itself boasts a rich history of hosting events that resonate with the Zimbabwean spirit. Its clubhouse has served as a stage for countless social gatherings and cultural events. Established in 1961, the club has witnessed generations of golfers teeing off on its lush greens. It has a huge historical legacy as a nurturing space for some of the best golf talent in the country.
Teclar Bomba, the operations manager at the facility, told
that this is epitomised today by the Sherwood Juniors Golf Academy which is now highly recognised in the golf fraternity. “Inspired by the diversity of our community, we are enriching
Sherwood’s legacy by elevating the space into a true community hub catering to the varied needs and interests of our community including through the celebration of diverse genres of the beautiful arts and culture that Zimbabwe has to offer,” she said.
MC of the night, Tatenda Gee introduced enigmatic chanter Dhadza D who set the stage ablaze with a high energy powered performance as he belted out songs such as “Magetsi Aenda” and his alphabet hit song “Alphabetically”. At one point the “Baba Fungi” hitmaker invited Mbare chanter Kinnah for a duet on the song “Burn Dem” much to the pleasure of the crowd.
To add a unique twist, renowned Zimbabwean producer Oskid also took to the stage, armed with his trademark beats. Female reggae artist Mel B’s smooth reggae vocals got the crowd singing along from the beginning of her set to the end. Her music draws inspiration from contemporary reggae influences infused with local sounds.
The night’s biggest surprise was Guspy Warrior who closed off the celebrations in style with his signature blend of reggae and dancehall.
Beyond the pulsating beats and electrifying performances, the gala served as a poignant reminder of TrustAfrica’s unwavering commitment to the continent’s development. On the night, a total of one hundred and thirty-seven dollars was raised for Ngoma Yepasichigare with more being pledged towards buying uniforms for them.
Organisers also hinted at a New Year’s Eve crossover party on the night of December 31 which will feature Victor Kunonga and Selmor Mtukudzi. The cover charge has been pegged at USD$10.
