Our wonderful Matopos camp
CHARACTER is one of the attributes that hinders success in any given curriculum be it academics or career objectives. Schools have tried unsuccessfully to completely do away with the abuse of drugs and teenage pregnancy. George Emmanuel College in a different approach went on a camping trip in
Matopos from the 13th to the 20th of August were students were taught on issues relating to Drug Abuse, Teenage Pregnancy, AIDS awareness, leadership skills, acceptance, submission, grooming and Lifetime skills.
This event saw students from other schools joining hands to fight the epidemic under the National Blaze banner. St Dominics, St Davids Bonda, Mutare Boys High, Kriste Mambo, just to mention a few were part of the schools that took part in the National Blaze Anti-Drug Abuse campaign. We had a chance to interview Auntie who went with these students on this eight day camping tour.“Drugs are robbing our children….” “As parents we do not want to bring up ‘Educated fools’. What use is this student who had 10 ‘A’s at ‘O’ level when he/she can’t pursue his/her career because he is always drunk?”
What makes this camp different?
“Study of teenage behavior.” We believe teenagers have 3 personalities. “The second personality is this one they portray in the presence of teachers and school authorities but sadly however, the 3rd personality is the one that is the correct personality of these teenagers.
This is the character they portray behind closed doors or with friends. “Unfortunately this is the most dangerous personality because neither the parents nor the school knows what it is made of. We use our psychological approach to come up with the third personality which makes it easy to correct basing on the true personality,” said the George Emmanuel psychologist known as Auntie.
The camp was an opportunity to bring out that third personality in us and it worked wonders. We thank our school for the camp and everything that it provides for us. Like the textbooks that are there in abundance and the wonderful learning facilities. ◆ send your articles, pictures, poetry, art . . . to Charles Mushinga at charles.mushinga@ zimpapers. co. zw or mushingacharles@gmail.com or follow Charles Mushinga on Facebook or @charlesmushinga on Twitter.
