Junior council’s 62nd inaugurati­on

ON THE evening of the 4th of September 2015, the 62nd Harare City Junior Council was inaugurate­d at the Townhouse Chambers in the heart of nation’s cap- ital.

The 2015-2016 Junior body consists of 82 young and enthusiast­ic leaders selected from across 38 schools in the Sunshine City. The widely successful evening was graced by Acting Mayor Councilor C. Moyo.

Parents and respective school representa­tives attended the event to witness the swearing in of the new Council. After five months of intense training by the Institute of Junior Aldermen the Junior honorable are fully geared up and prepared to tackle on challenges and be the voice of the youth.

The 2015 Council’s Deputy Mayor Chair has been delegated to female Honorable Councilor Samantha Monera of Dzivareskw­a High, the appointmen­t of Miss Monera has triggered a lot of excitement in the Junior Council as she is the first female executive chair to represent high density suburb schools.

She is often referred to as the pillar of strength for high density suburb students by fellow Junior Councilors for her achievemen­t on the acquisitio­n of the highly rated post.

The zeal shown for Miss Moneras’ appointmen­t is a demonstrat­ion shown by the Council to influence more female individual­s from high density suburb schools to come and take part in the Junior Council together with other clubs and societies for it has been proven that they are force to be reckoned with.

The new Junior Council has been set out to carry over the great work done by the outgoing Council. Councilor Moyo eluded to the young leaders the importance to follow the example that has been set by the senior body in helping Harare achieve a world class city by 2025.

He stated the importance of unity and togetherne­ss in our term of office. In his acceptance speech, the incoming Junior Mayor Rufaro Manyepa from Churchill High School said: “Our vision and hope is to leave a lasting impression by our work in the coming year such that all that we embark on will not only benefit the present generation, but the future as well. That the underprivi­leged children will have not just the same, but better exposure as African children.”

He concluded the evening with this quote “Divided we might move faster, but united, we will go further.”

The Junior Mayor outlined a vision that will surely set the world on fire.

The Harare City Junior Councilors will this year focus on five main aspects Gender Equality, Drug and Alcohol Abuse, Sports Fitness and Wellness, The Drive for an Ecofriendl­y City together with Educationa­l Mentoring and Guidance.The evening was concluded by refreshmen­ts and socializin­g amongst our invited guests, parents and the new honorable Councilors. The executive committee was treated to a photoshoot in the mayor’s parlor as a sign of the cohesion between the Senior and Junior Councils.
