‘Honour legacy of Brig-Gen Muchemwa’

- Sunday Mail Reporter

ZIMBABWEANS should safeguard their sovereignty as a tribute to national hero Brigadier-General (Retired) Felix Muchemwa, a Cabinet minister has said.

At Brig- Gen Muchemwa’s memorial service in Harare yesterday, Defence Minister Dr Sydney Sekeramayi said the late former Health Minister was one of the most dedicated liberation war heroes.

“Despite having a good life in London where he was working as a lecturer, Cde Muchemwa gave up all that and joined the struggle,” said Dr Sekeramayi.

“And he was everywhere doing everything; in the training camps, in the refugee camps and in the hospitals to try and make sure that the liberation struggle continued. Therefore, it is now upon us who are still here to carry on his legacy and make sure that we never betray it.”

He also said: “The struggle was a difficult period, I tell you. Comrades were falling sick everyday, and there were a lot of disease outbreaks in the camps.

“So, it was upon Cde Muchemwa, Dr Ushewokunze and I to make sure our people were healthy enough to fight in the war.

‘‘At one point, the Rhodesian Forces poisoned our medicine supplies and people got very sick, while others even died. So, trying to contain all those things was very difficult.”

Rtd Brig-Gen Muchemwa’s widow, Cde Tapuwa Muchemwa, said her husband was kind and passionate about assisting people with disabilities.

“He was a man with a kind heart and you can see the works he did to help the disabled,” she said.

“It is a big loss to those who benefited from his work because some of the projects he was running are now beginning to fall apart.

‘‘People are taking advantage, looting the things that he left behind for disabled children. It’s not right; let’s protect his legacy. Let’s not destroy it.”

Finance and Economic Development Minister Patrick Chinamasa and Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services Commissioner- General Paradzayi Zimondi were among those in attendance.
