The perfect mindset

- Norah Spie

I LOVE January! Am making a conscious decision to love it so that it can love me back. The alternative brings nothing but grief so I am going to love January, especially January 2017.

Most people now say they do not make new year’s resolutions because they do not keep them anyway. I am more for listing what you want to achieve. This is the first step to success. Small step but nonetheless still significant.

Dream, plan towards it and execute! As I alluded on my radio show on personal branding, you need to decide what you want to be and it is okay to do this in January and measure your achievement when the year ends.

Do not be bullied out of your plans, simply because it did not work for them doesn’t mean it will not work for you.

One of my ‘to do list 2017’ was to get back to regular writing again and what better place than the country’s most popular newspaper, The Sunday Mail. Those who have followed my writings over the years already know about my style of writing — simple does it. If it was a drink it would involve tonic water and lemon as some of the ingredients.

Given our busy lives, which seem to come with an even shorter attention span, I will be doing a news round up and commentary of the week’s news.

A lot has happened already in 2017 with some people calling for the year to end already! What we have is hope in Zimbabwe. We can agree we all need 2017 to be better. That previous year that I will not dignify with mentioning its name left most us drained and uninspired.

Therefore, we need 2017 to be better. However, looks like 2017 has its own plans. Within its first week we had witnessed some alarming developments both socially (some cultural shocks, drama, acting skills), politically (some subliminal statements) and of course sport with the Zimbabwe Warriors making sure there is never a dull moment.

Parents in last minute ‘back to school’ haste — The Herald — 10 January, 2017

Most of you reading this are either parents or guardians of school going children and if on Monday you were in a big huff and puff, I ask why?

School closes, school opens. School fees are then needed for the new term. Uniforms, shoes and books will always need replacing. We know this in December and yet we wait until the day before school opens to put it all together and create more stress for ourselves.

I write this being conscious of the financial strain that most parents operate under, but is the reason we procrastinate just based on not having enough money at the desired time? Where does this money suddenly come from on the day schools open?

To top it off, retailers of school uniforms and accessories hike their prices a few days before schools open. If you can, plan and do the needful earlier to avoid unnecessary rush.

Motorists face new road fee — The Herald, 9 January 2017

Apparently it costs $850 000 to $1,2 million to construct a kilometre of tarred road. Roads do not come cheap and we get it! We sort of get it that Zinara is not allocating adequate funds to city authorities. What we do not get is why after paying road tax and toll gate fees, Harare City Council would even consider imposing city road toll fees on us?

Someone needs to lock up Zinara and City of Harare in a small room with no windows so they talk and come up with a resolution that does not involve motorists being further taxed.

We are already forking out too much in suspension repairs and tyre replacements, not to mention the risk to life we endure by using these dangerous roads daily. Please sort it out.

Stunner’s online drama inspires video game “Olinda’s Revenge” — TechZim — 11 January, 2017

I really tried hard not to talk about

these two but they are everywhere like a rash!

Some smart kid saw an opportunity in all this drama and developed a gaming application called ‘Olinda’s Revenge’.

The developers of the game go by the name N-Sho Tech and quickly capitalised on the interest generated by the Stunner-Olinda drama. I downloaded the game and I found it pretty user friendly.

A happy ending with a dramatic start! Gold haul crashes — Chronicle

— 11 January, 2017 The people of Bubi District in Matebeleland North had ‘manna from heaven’ when a plane carrying gold crashed in their backyard. I see a ‘prophet’ claiming that one!

The two on board the aircraft sustained minor injuries. Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe said they are investigating cause of the crash but what we really want to know is who’s gold is it? Where was it coming from? Where was it going?

Why does Zimbabwe seem to attract suspicious aircrafts in its airspace? Remember the plane that had blooding dripping and had millions of rands stuffed in the aircraft. What is going on in the air?
