Keep our city clean

-

EDITOR - The clean-ups that were conducted at major bus ranks in Harare’s CBD over the last two weeks are commendable.

The Environmental Management Agency and Harare City Council set a good example. However, it appears a more sustainable approach is required if we are to win this battle against dirt.

Just moments after clean-ups, we see litter everywhere as if no one ever heard about the campaigns.

Constant education is my recommendation.

Conscientising the general populace will create responsible citizens who will adopt a “no tolerance” attitude towards dirt and garbage. If one passes through ranks such as Fourth Street Bus Terminus, they will discover that dirt has since found its way back and is still accumulating there.

Commuter omnibus crews and passengers alike litter the areas without regard for the efforts Ema and the City Council are putting in to making our city a worldclass destination.

If anything, Ema agents or municipal police should always be on the ground; fining or arresting litterbugs.

Bins are never used optimally despite their being distributed in numbers.

At the end of the day, the very same litterbugs blame authorities for “sleeping on the job” when, in fact, it is everyone’s responsibility to keep our environment clean. Look at what happens to our drainage systems in the rain season. It is you and I who cause that. Let’s clean up, please. Sasha Musarira,

Harare.
