$9m for learning material

- Sunday Mail Reporter

GOVERNMENT has secured $9 million to purchase learning and teaching materials for primary and secondary schools under the new education curriculum, a Cabinet Minister has said.

The material will benefit Early Child Development A, Grades One and Three as well as Forms One, Three and Five.

The development is also expected to boost the local book and publishing industry.

In an interview with The Sunday Mail last week, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Dr Lazarus Dokora said, “We have secured $9 million from our development partners so that we can procure learning related material in line with the new curriculum.

“These include books, but we are also looking at other learning kits which can be used in the education of our pupils. There is no doubt that this money will stimulate growth in the education sector as jobs will be created and the downstream effect will be massive.

“We will see new books in the sector soon. People are being employed as we speak and that is content creators, editors and so on,” said Minister Dokora.

The Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education has already partnered with local universities such as University of Zimbabwe, Midlands State University, Great Zimbabwe University and Zimbabwe Open University to improve skills for teachers.

Government rolled out the new curriculum in January after a pilot project last year.
