Let us be guided by one spirit

-

EDITOR — I watched and heard President Mugabe speak at the fifth Presidential Youth Interface Rally in Chinhoyi last week. For me, one of the major highlights of the President’s speech was the imperative of unity. This is the same theme, in my view, that has underlined his addresses at the preceding youth interfaces. I totally agree with President Mugabe. Zanu-PF is the ruling party. It was moulded by fire and brimstone during the fiery Second Chimurenga.

It defeated the enemy because of unity of purpose.

Remember, there was Zanla and Zipra; two distinct revolutionary armies from two distinct parties. Though this was the case, a common thread bound them together. That is being Zimbabwean. And there was a common enemy, too. Both wanted to liberate the country from colonial lunacy which propagated white supremacy while disparaging indigenes.

It was unsurprising when the two parties amalgamated under the umbrella of the Unity Accord.

We are one people, and that is the spirit that should guide us all. Why should people from the same team plot against and fight each other?

That is the same question the President posed to party cadres recently. A house divided against itself risks falling short of triumph.

As President Mugabe counselled, differences can be discussed and resolved. What some of us want is for our national leaders to concentrate on our livelihoods.

This can only be done from a united front.
