SA crash claims 5 Zim­bab­weans

FIVE Zim­bab­weans died yes­ter­day morn­ing fol­low­ing a col­li­sion between a Toy­ota Quan­tum and Sable Class bus about 10km be­fore Beit­bridge Bor­der Post in Musina. Lim­popo Prov­ince Min­istry of Trans­port spokesper­son Mr Matome Moremi con­firmed the death of five peo­ple in the com­muter om­nibus.

He said both the Toy­ota Quan­tum and bus were trav­el­ling from Jo­han­nes­burg to Zim­babwe. The Quan­tum, he said, made a sud­den U-turn in front of the bus re­sult­ing in the col­li­sion.

“At around 0337 hours this morn­ing, On N1-North at Mussina check point Vhembe District, a cross-bor­der Toy­ota Quan­tum turned in front of on-com­ing traf­fic and col­lided with a cross-bor­der bus. Five peo­ple died and sev­eral oth­ers were in­jured. Full de­tails will be com­mu­ni­cated later.”

The de­ceased are at Mussina Hospi­tal mor­tu­ary.

The in­ci­dent comes shortly af­ter 15 Zim­bab­weans were killed in two sep­a­rate in­ci­dents on the N1 High­way out­side Polok­wane.

The first ac­ci­dent in­volved an In­ter­cape bus that over­turned, killing 11 peo­ple, af­ter the driver lost con­trol.

In the other ac­ci­dent, which oc­curred near the same spot as the first, three peo­ple were killed when the driver lost con­trol of a ve­hi­cle that was trav­el­ling from Pre­to­ria.
