Promoting environmental child rights

THIS year’s Global Action Month for the Youths is running under the theme “Promoting environmental child rights and promoting peace within Africa”.

On Saturday November 30, the Citizen Child Youth Media Project members went to Chitungwiza Town Council offices where they handed their petition tothe Chitungwiza Junior Council.

They are calling on the city fathers to implement environmental child rights.

The event was attended by Citizen Child Youth Media Project personnel, who included Mr Mandishora, Zengeza 1 High School media club representatives and honourable members from the Junior Council.

The petition was handed over to the Junior Council by Leon Matewa, the former president of Zengeza High 1 Media Club. It was received by Tanya Ziyambi, the Chamber Secretary. She was representing His Worship, the Junior Mayor.

The Junior Council is in agreement with the petition, saying indeed Citizen Child hit the nail on the head as the petition paints the situation on the ground as far as environmental child rights are concerned in Chitungwiza.

The petition touched on the creation of safe spaces for children — like playgrounds, dealing with uncollected garbage and the shortage of water, which is putting children’s health at great risk. While all Junior Councils have been pushing for change, duty bearers are yet to take action.

The Zengeza High 1 Media Club president, Theophelu, was present and emphasised the need to have child-friendly schools.

“We need violence-free child-friendly schools, where children can learn freely and pursue their dreams,” he said.

Global Action Month has seen more young people calling for better services in their communities.

ln Zimbabwe, TDH Germany and TDH Switzerland are supporting the programmes, together with the Citizen Child Youth Media Project.
