THE country’s largest integrated media house, Zimpapers, has donated an assortment of goods worth thousands of dollars to Shungu Dzevana Children’s Home in Mhondoro as part of its corporate social responsibility.

Zimpapers Digital and Publishing (DAP) general manager Mr Marks Shayamano and The Sunday Mail Editor, Victoria Ruzvidzo, handed over 10 bunk beds, mattresses, 100 plates, and 100 cups to the home on Friday.

Mr Shayamano said the company will next year drill a borehole at the shelter to provide water for the institution.

“We are going to fulfil the water needs arising from the area of farming by a drilling borehole.

“The borehole will not only provide water for consumption but for the farming project.

“The borehole drilling project is going to be embarked on early next year. ”

Ruzvidzo said facilitating development was at the core of Zimpapers’ work.

“As The Sunday Mail we are a know a family consists of parents and children and in a family, children are the most important.

“We know this is not all that they need but we did our best so that we can assist them.

“Most rural areas were neglected but we thank God for the Second Republic that is also taking care of that.

“As Zimpapers at large and The Sunday Mail in particular we do not leave out rural areas and rural development because rural areas are important in national development.

“So we are here to extend a hand as we have done with the beds and with the cutlery that we have brought today.

“We hope this will make a difference in your everyday life.” Shungu Dzevana founder and national executive director Sister Mercy Mutyambizi thanked Zimpapers for the donation.

“We are very grateful to Zimpapers for thinking about the vulnerable in our society.

“We thank God and ask him to continue blessing each and everyone who has put a hand in here.

“It takes a lot of effort to drive all the way from Harare to Mhondoro with these beds, mattresses and cutlery.

“We are very grateful because you did not only stop there but you also promised to embark on a borehole drilling project.”

I DREADED the 129km journey to Shungu Dzevana Children’s Home in rural Mhondoro.

I knew that the Harare-Chivhu Highway detours would be uncomfortable and take most of our travelling time.

At the same time, I was aware that on our return, the traffic jungle at Mbudzi roundabout would take its toll considering this was a Friday. All team members on this assignment insisted that I come along using all kinds of justifications; the major reason being it would be good for me for what reason, I didn’t know and I didn’t ask.

The highway’s detours were exactly as I had anticipated. Thick clouds of dust engulfed the environment raised by all manner of traffic. Some daredevils were overtaking in spite of the limited visibility, endangering all and sundry.

To make matters worse, I was a passenger, with little control over what the driver was doing except to make suggestions.

Two hours later, we arrived at our destination. As soon as we arrived and disembarked from our car, all the children who had been playing various games stopped and made sure that they positioned themselves at vantage points. We found some chairs before a Sister came through to meet us.

I later found out from the Sister that it was out of discipline that all the children sat down and greeted us before resuming their games.

A group of boys moved over to the pastures and started playing soccer on a field with absolutely nothing to show that it was ideal for such a serious game. Then one of the foster mothers called off the game because she reasoned that it was not safe for the ball.

What struck me most was that the players themselves did not have any football boots or even ordinary tennis shoes to play with
