Security guards deserve better pay

- Donald Trash.

I read with concern your story headlined: “US$34k Fawcett robbery staged”.

In recent times, we have witnessed cases of security guards robbing their employers while transporting cash on their behalf.

I have asked myself why we are witnessing a rise in such cases.

I came to the conclusion that these guards are dreadfully underpaid and at the same time they are being asked to transport large sums of cash by their employers.

Moving around with hundreds of thousands of dollars when you are being paid less than US$100 a month can tempt even the most honest among us.

This is not to say that the actions of these thieving guards are justified.

Not at all. In fact, this is a clarion call to all security companies to consider paying their workers better salaries given the risks and temptations that come with their jobs.

Lastly, I would like to thank the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) for doing an exceptional job in quickly investigating these cases and making arrests.
