Let’s support the Zimdollar

- Eddy Gakanda.

WE learnt a lot about the dangers of mismanaging our local currency during the First Republic.

A lot of mistakes were made during those days, notwithstanding the impact sanctions also had on the economy.

Today, many Zimbabweans have a lot of trust issues with the Zimbabwe dollar because of the trauma they went through during those days.

This means that the Government now needs to do more to engender trust in our local currency.

The President is always saying there is no country in history that has ever developed while using another country’s currency.

I was glad to read in your paper last week that the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe is doing all in its powers this year to ensure that the Zim dollar becomes the currency of choice among locals.

All businesses should be compelled by law to accept the local currency and there should be sufficient sanctions for those that refuse to do so.

There should also be incentives, such as tax breaks, for businesses that deal exclusively in Zim dollars.

Creating confidence in our currency, I believe, remains Government’s last biggest challenge in its economic reforms agenda. I believe that if we work hard enough we will solve this last remaining challenge this year.
