Natsai tackles mental health issues

- Society Reporter

EVELYN Natsai Moyo, a rising gospel musician, is using music to highlight the plight of people affected by mental health issues.

Her latest seven-track album titled “Ndadzoka”, which is made up of songs done in different genres, mostly addresses issues affecting people’s mental wellbeing.

The title song “Ndadzoka” encourages people experiencing mental health challenges to soldier on.

“The track ‘Ndadzoka’ is a song of repentance in which I sing about how temptation can easily overcome when people are disappointed. So, I am encouraging people to remain steadfast during difficult times so that they can withstand temptation,” Natsai said.

“One has to heed the voice of God and turn back to Him for comfort and healing. As human beings, we face painful situations all the time and if we can turn to God for healing, we do not fall into the devil’s trap and succumb to the temptation of retaliation or taking matters into our own hands.”

Apart from music, she is a youth advisor and worship leader at the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

The musician, who was born in 1980 and is also a chartered accountant by profession, chronicled how a personal experience inspired her to sing about mental health issues.

“In 2018, I lost my job and went into depression. Upon receiving counselling, I decided to follow my passion in music and speak, through music, to people who are depressed and bring them to a place of comfort,” Natsai, a married mother of three, said.

She also got inspiration from the Covid19 pandemic.

“This pandemic left people in economic hardships, resulting in the increase in domestic violence.

‘‘Many people are suffering from fear and mental health issues. I decided to record music that addressed the fears that people have, giving them hope and encouragement.”

“Ndadzoka” was produced by Gibson Makumbe and Nigel Nyangombe.

Other notable tracks on the album include “Batai Ruoko”, “Kusatenda” and “Makanaka Jesu.”

Natsai broke into the gospel music scene in 2020 when she released her debut album “Vanokurwira”.

Songs from the album received fair airplay on national radio stations and on TV.

Following the release of the debut album, she was approached by renowned producers. “Vanokurwira” was followed up by the single “Zadzai Moyo”, which was released in 2021.

In the same year, she formed Tehillah Praise Band, which is made up of highly talented youths.

Since its formation, it has brought the praise and worship experience to live audiences all over the world.
