RESURGENT CAPS United picked up a second consecutive win in the Castle Lager Premier Soccer League with a hard-fought victory over Bulawayo City at Barbourfields Stadium yesterday.

On-fire striker William Manondo scored the only goal of the match in the 71st minute to hand Makepekepe the three points.

The visitors had goalkeeper Tonderai Mateyaunga to thank after he denied Amakhosi a number of times to ensure the Green Machine returned to the capital city with three points in the bag.

Bulawayo City dominated proceedings in the first-half which saw CAPS United substitute Marshal Machazane in the 36th minute because the veteran defender had a tight muscle.

The Green Machine started off the second half brightly, but City soon took control of the proceedings.

It was, however, the visitors who were to score when former Soccer Star of the Year Rodwell Chinyengetere engineered things. He fed the ball to substitute Clive Augusto who sent in a cross into the box where Manondo had the easiest of tasks to tuck the ball into the nets.

City fought hard to find the equaliser but it was CAPS United who almost made it two up at the end had it not been for some brilliant goalkeeping by Bhekimpilo Ncube to keep out a Jimmy Dzingai close range strike.

Philani “Beefy” Ncube, the Bulawayo City coach, was of the view that it was a game of two halves and CAPS United used the only goal scoring opportunity that came their way.

“It was a game of two halves. In the first half they dominated, in the second half we dominated. They only had one chance and they buried it, then we had at least two or three chances that we were supposed to bury.

“We cannot crucify the boys for that, one thing for sure there are more positives than negatives as far as this game is concerned,’’ Ncube said.

CAPS United gaffer Lloyd Chitembwe praised his opposite number for doing a wonderful job with his team.

“It was a competitive game. Bulawayo City I am sure they were very much up for it. Congratulations to Beefy, he has done well, a very good job with the team but at the end of the day it was a good result for us, though we started a bit a slow.

“We were not as fluent as we normally are but at the end of the day what matters is the result,’’ said Chitembwe.

After slumping to their worst defeat in their Premiership history — a 6-2 thrashing by Manica Diamonds in Mutare — CAPS United have now scored seven goals off a 6-0 mauling of hapless Whawha and yesterday’s triumph over Bulawayo City.
